  한동안 전시 정보를 정리하고 관람 후기를 작성하는 것을 멈췄다. 기록하는 것을 멈춘 동안에도 종종 전시 관람을 했지만 우연한 기회 혹은 대형 전시회여서 보았지 굳이 찾지 않았다. 소셜미디어의 스크롤을 무작정 내리다가 마주치는 전시 정보나 광고에도 애써 무시하며 지나치는 시간이었다.

  내가 왜 이렇게 전시회를 관람하는 것에 흥미를 잃게 되었을까 생각해보니, 나에게 늘 예술은 그랬다 싶다. 인간의 사고와 감정을 담는 예술의 결과물을 설명하기에 쉬운 방법이 있겠나 싶지만서도, 그래서인지 전시회에 가서 받는 팜플릿에 적힌 전시 기획, 작가 및 작품에 대한 전문가들의 설명은 모호하고 추상적인 표현들로 가득차 있다. 나는 전문적인 이론 지식을 가진 적도 없고, 예술의 감상 방법을 모르는데다 영국에서 살면서부터 그런 설명들을 영어로 접하니 더더욱이 예술이 어렵고 이해되지 않을 때가 많다(어려운 법률, 경제적 용어를 직업적으로 다루는 조던이마저 미술관, 갤러리에서 표현하는 설명들이 어렵고 복잡하다고 느끼는데..). 나는 그저 '예쁘다', '이 작품은 뭔가 끌리는 매력이 있네?'라는 마음으로만 감상하는데 깊이 탐구하고자 그 어려운 설명들을 공부하듯 파고드니 주기적으로 지치게 되는 것이다. 게다가 그걸 기록하는 블로그 포스팅은 시간이 또 오래 걸리고.

 

  하지만 역시 난 예술이 좋다. 궁굼하던 작품을 직접 보고,  새로운 작가나 작품을 알고, 다양한 전시회를 보는게 좋다. 비록 그 작가나 작품에 대한 깊은 조예를 쌓지 못하고 그 순간에만 일시적으로 소비하는 것이더라도 그 시간들이 즐겁다.

  예전에 우연히 스쳐 들었던 한 아트 컬렉터의 말이 기억에 남는다. 예술을 감상할 때 너무 어렵게 생각하지 말고 만약 이 전시장 작품들 중에 딱 하나만 골라 내 집 벽에 걸어둔다면 무슨 작품을 어디에 걸고 싶은지 생각해 보라 했다. 그러면 좀 더 쉽고 현실적으로 작품을 감상하고 스스로의 취향을 알 수 있을거라고.

  앞으로는 나도 전시회를 그런 마음으로 다녀볼까 한다. 그래서 다시 런던 전역의 전시 정보들을 찾게 되었다. 가벼운 마음이든 진중한 마음이든 기분 좋은 상상과 함께든 내가 예술을 좋아하는 마음을 잃지 않고 그 시간들을 즐기기 위해. 그리고 그런 시간들이 나의 취향을 알고 나 자신을 아는 소중한 기회가 되기를 바라며 말이다.
